Someone one said learning self management for health matters is like ‘learning life long health skills for life.’
May 08, 2026
I started learning self management skills in the mid 1980’s.
In the summer of 1996, I learnt extra skills when I attended the INPUT Pain Management Programme for managing persistent pain.
I still use those life long pain management skills even today, for other long term health conditions I have picked up along the way, becoming an older person.
When I worked on the NHS Expert Patients Programme I learnt even more skills
Learning self-management for health is akin to acquiring lifelong skills.
It empowers people to take control of their health and wellness.
Key skills developed include:
- Goal-setting and action planning
- Time management
- Stress management
- Healthy decision-making
Self-management is an ongoing process that contributes to:
- Better management of long term conditions
- Overall resilience and adaptability
- Emphasises the importance of being proactive and engaged in our health journey.
- Ultimately leads to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
