Welcome message from Keith Meldrum who lives in Canada

Keith has lived with persistent neuropathic pain since August of 1986, following a near fatal motor vehicle accident. In 2021 he was diagnosed with primary mitochondrial disease.

Supported self-management is for people living with long term health conditions who could be struggling and want some simple ideas, to help them get back on track and in their driving seat.

See below these three questions below

  • Do you do more on good days and less on bad days?
  • Are you an overachiever, doing more than you have to?
  • Are you a people pleaser, finding it hard to say NO to others when you are asked to do things?

Did you answer yes to any of the three questions? If you did then the supported self management toolkit could be for you.

What is supported self-management?

What is supported self-management?

Supported self-management is about working in partnership with your healthcare team, family, friends and work colleagues to manage your symptoms and conditions.

I’m 72 as I write this and I have been living with long-term health conditions, all my life.

Over the years, in one way or another I have had to adapt and manage them.

The long-term health condition I got stuck on was pain and I lost 7years of my life to it. I needed some extra help and in 1996 I got myself on a pain management programme in London, called INPUT. The programme gave me the life-long skills, tools and most importantly the confidence to get back on track. Since 1997, I’ve not had to take any pain medication.

The self-management toolkit isn’t supposed to be the last word in self-management, but just to get you started. Self-management is all about taking action, getting you back in the driving seat and on with your life, in spite of your conditions.

Is self-managing a long-term health condition easy? Well it’s like most things, you have to work at it. I’m not an academic guy, but if I can do it, then I know others can as well.

Here is a short video I speak about my pain journey and recovery.
