Mitochondrial Disease and Persistent Pain Sudden Symptom Changes

May 29, 2026

Living with mitochondrial disease and persistent pain is challenging because symptoms can change suddenly and unpredictably. A person may feel relatively stable one moment and experience increased pain, exhaustion, weakness, dizziness, or neurological symptoms the next.

These almost sudden changes in symptoms can make many daily activities very difficult. Tasks that seem manageable one day may become almost impossible the next because the body’s nervous system and energy production are constantly fluctuating.

What many people do not see is the amount of planning, pacing, and energy conservation required just to get through everyday life. Even small activities can trigger significant symptom changes, leading to prolonged recovery periods. Because these conditions are invisible, people may appear “fine” while internally struggling with pain, fatigue, and significantly reduced function. The unpredictability can affect independence, relationships, mental health, employment, and quality of life.

Invisible illnesses are illnesses. Dynamic symptoms are still serious symptoms. Compassion, flexibility, and understanding can make a meaningful difference for those living with mitochondrial disease and persistent pain.
